Lets not kid ourselves that we have always called all dance music EDM, EDM came about when the American scene exploded with shitty kid on electro music that got branded EDM. Why anyone would want to make Hardstyle sound like that is beyond me.

In the US it's an attempt to commercialize rave culture with watered down house, trap and dubstep. Anyone involved with dnb, hardcore, hardstyle, proper techno, etc, would be insulted if you called their music EDM. Some people still try to push it as an "umbrella term", but the people who identify as part of the "edm scene" have nothing to do with the underground scene.

I've been around a long time and I never heard this term until corporate greed got involved.

Exactly, Been raving since 92 and not once was EDM ever used for undeground music (calling a hard trance record label it has no revelance in what were talking about) This Hardstyle EDM crossover is nonsensical.
