There was a short article I read a while back that suggested spotify is to blame for the continued shortening of tracks. Basically an artist is paid that extremely small amount for each play regardless of track length so they earn the same amount through a 2 minute song as they will through a 6 minute song. So if you make three short songs that add up to the same amount of time as a long one, you earn 3 times as much. It's a bummer because I love those 5-7 min tracks that feels like a story is being unfolded but with the evolution of streaming services, that's disappearing.

That's interesting about Spotify, since i don't stream music i had no idea how it works when it comes to paying artists. I mean i knew it's ridiculously tiny amount of money, but that's about it.

I also think it has to do with digital mixing. You can sync the shit out of your music, so you can mix faster. In addition, the attention span is also just shorter these days.
